Step 2 – Cash Flow

Cash flow is the lifeblood of any business. If cash stops flowing, even a profitable business can find itself in serious financial difficulty. In fact, many businesses fail not because they are unprofitable, but because they do not have enough cash available to meet their day-to-day obligations.

Cash flow refers to the movement of money in and out of your business. Ideally, you want positive cash flow, where more money is coming in than going out. Monitoring your cash flow is essential for sustainable growth, as it helps you determine whether you have sufficient funds to cover operating expenses, supplier payments, wages, tax obligations and other upcoming commitments.

It's also important to monitor your cash conversion cycle. Understanding how long it takes to convert your investment in stock and services into cash receipts can help identify what is locking up your cash, while also providing valuable insights into debtor days, creditor days and inventory management.

Ways to Improve Cash Flow

Consider the following questions:

  • Are your customers paying you on time?
  • Could you offer incentives or discounts for early payment?
  • Can you negotiate more favourable payment terms with suppliers without increasing your costs?
  • Would leasing equipment be a better option than purchasing it outright?
  • Have you reviewed your staffing structure to determine whether more flexible arrangements could improve efficiency?
  • Are there opportunities to better manage inventory levels and reduce over-ordering?

Small improvements in these areas can have a significant impact on your cash position and strengthen your business's ability to grow.

If you're unsure where to start, or you're not certain what is affecting your cash flow, speaking with an experienced accountant or business adviser can provide valuable insights and practical strategies to improve your financial position.
